ZOOM Blog

Hey everyone! This blog is about the 1999-2005 revival of the PBS kids series ZOOM. I've been a huge fan of the show since I was ten years old. Since it's almost been ten years since the final season aired, I thought I would share my memories of ZOOM. I have all of seasons two through seven on VHS, and a little of season one. I first saw the show in season three when my friends were talking about it in school one day. At a later time I saw it was on TV and decided to watch it. I really liked it. The only problem was it was on at 3:30 and I usually got home around 3:45, so I would miss the first half of the show! It wasn't until a year later that I realized we got two PBS networks and it was on at 5:00 on the other channel. I only watched season three a few times before I stopped. It wasn't until a year later that I got a real interest in it. I had just gotten my own TV set with a built in VHS recorder and was able to record any show with a blank tape and press of a button! (This was very near to the end of the VHS era before it was rendered completely obsolete.) I saw ZOOM was on one day and decided to record it. Soon I started recording it every day until I had every episode that aired to watch anytime I wanted to! I would make some of the things on the show, Cafe ZOOM, ZOOM dos, zingers, etc. My favorite part was ZOOM Playhouse where the ZOOMers played different characters (most of the time). Were you a fan of ZOOM? Comment below and talk about it, hopefully some ZOOM fans can relive the nostalgia of the show. I'll talk in future blogs about the different things I've tried from the show, opinions, and even my experience trying out for season seven! Also, you can friend me on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009510452850

  1. I love Zoom too!! It's such a great show, and I really wish it was still airing. I used to have a tape with a few old Season 1 episodes, but sadly, I lost it. :(. I can't wait to read more posts!

  2. By the way, from the season 1 episodes that you taped, do you have the Zoom Playhouse where Jared was a talk show host, and he interviewed Greek gods or something? That was on one of the old episodes I taped and it was super funny. I haven't been able to find it on YouTube, so I was just curious if you knew what I was talking about. ;-)

    1. No, I don't remember that, so I doubt I have it. Sorry.

    2. I remembered that play. I also remembered the play, The Present, where the ZOOMers are trying to keep a secret that's inside a box Keiko has for Alisa as a gift.

  3. I love ZOOM when I was a kid in 2004. I used to like my favorite season, Season 4 from 2002. I like this season because I love to watch Caroline, Rachel, Kaleigh, and the other 4 ZOOMers, Aline, Matt, Garrett, and Esturado doing science experiments, playing games, performing plays, making recipes, telling jokes, and other fun stuff sent in by kids all over the country of the United States and Canada. From the Season 4 episodes you taped, do you have the full episode with the ZOOM Sci where the ZOOMers build egg vehicles that prevent them from breaking when they crash into a wall and the ZOOM Playhouse where Rachel can't seem to memorize her lines during, "Captain, O Captain", the other full episode with the ZOOM Playhouse where the ZOOMers of Season 4 produce the third part of the Red Bench play, and the rest of the full Season 4 episodes? I was wondering if you knew was I was talking about.

  4. I remember watching ZOOM when I was a kid. I figured out how I can think of some ideas and fun activities on the show. The best part of that is sending it to ZOOM. I even love the theme song and all the funniest intros I watch before the show. The Z-Mail Song, ZOOM vids, and ZOOM Playhouse. Send it to ZOOM!

  5. From the first season, I remember seeing the Egg Drop challenge with David, Alisa, Jared, and Lynese on YouTube, but does anyone have the other egg drop challenge in that season where the ZOOMers are designing a container on the ground that would safely catch a falling egg from breaking? The ZOOMers that were in that one are Jared, Keiko, Pablo, and David.

  7. Before there was the segment, ZOOM Into Action, does anybody remember the ZOOMa Cum Laude segment? That segment was used during the first season and the second season. Just like ZOOM Into Action, it shows kids who are nominated of doing something great and honorable. At the end, any of the ZOOMers holding a ZOOMa Cum Laude certificate and says, "Congratulations, (the name of a kid who was nominated). You'll be receiving your ZOOMa Cum Laude certificate in the mail." Then at the every end, all the ZOOMers say, "Congratulations!" Starting at Season 3, it was changed to ZOOM Into Action. Instead of "Congratulations" at the very end, it was "And join the ZOOMteam!"

  8. I remembered some of the plays from ZOOMplayhouse that are in 1st season. They are:

    Happily Ever After
    The Elevator
    Where's Your Homework?
    The Present
Little Red Riding Hood in Ubbi Dubbi
    Trouble In Candy Kingdom
    The Fortune Teller
    The Sweet Roll
    The Story Machine
    Lunch Line
    One Day
    Crime Just Doesn't Pay

Other ones that I'm wishing to see are Little Red Riding Hood in Ubbi Dubbi, Crime Just Doesn't Pay, a better quality of The Sweet Roll, and the full version of The Present (with the ending part that's missing, which was uploaded by KrisTheKnight).

  11. I still think it's amazing you managed to tape all of that. I didn't learn how to record on a VCR until I was almost 13.

  14. A few of my friends and I were featured in a Zoom into Action somewhere around 2002-2004 for redecoration of a bathroom in a child advocacy center in West Virginia. Does anyone know of any online archives of those segments? I'd love to find it.

    1. Hard to say. Various ZOOM Into Actions are missing since there were two versions of ZITA, the local one and the WGBY one. Yours must have been WGBY, which the majority of ZOOMFan1's videos are from. But he still has some local versions too, so I don't know.

  15. Thanks! I think it was only shown locally in the WV area. They sent us a tape of it, but goodness knows where it is!

  17. Do you think you can help me? I was on Zoom in 2000 or 2001 in Chicago. I think I talked about the cello or orchestra.
